They Light up my Life!

I just don’t understand it. Every where I go I seem to find a lamp that I simply cannot live without and that is absolutely perfect. I guess the good Lord thinks I need more light in my life or something.

First there was this - - a cute little oldie but goodie. And the colors perfectly match the “chicken” table that sits inside the front door. It’s very cute and is a nice nightlight too when just the bottom part is lit. (Isn't the shade nice - I bet I know someone who would love to have it! *snicker snicker*)

Here’s the lamp I could NOT live without and rode between my knees from LA to Seattle A treasure found at a local Salvation Army in San Diego that I have to have. I gotta admit – it looks great in the shabby chic living room.

Then there’s this - - -a must have from a local Goodwill. Imagine . . this lamp is pretty good size . .all hand painted and not a chip on her! I simply had to have this treasure to put on the table in front of the window. It’s especially nice when lit and the colors were perfect.

Okay and how could I resist this? With all of the teapots and blue and white dishes I just had to have this one too. It’s simply perfect!

I wonder what other lamps are in my future! If nothing else, there is certainly plenty of light in my house!

Picture Perfect!

Fixing up “our” new old house has really been fun! We’re not all done yet and I’m sure it will continue to be a work in progress. It has been so fun to paint and fix up and watch it progress. It really is turning out cute and full of personality!

The fun has been in checking out all of the local haunts (our word for thrift stores) for old discarded items that we needed to put finishing touches on our new home. Most of the paint we acquired thru mis-mixed sections at Freddies. It’s just amazing what you can find if you take the time to look and how much money can be saved.

We found . .well lamps of course . . LOL . . .and wallpaper border, rugs, furniture and of course assorted bric-a-brac. One day while browsing thru Value Village, Nineandahalf and I happened upon the perfect picture for above our sofa. I was delighted until I saw the price tax - - - - $49.99. It was big and perfect but that was a lot of money on our moving budget and for a picture at a thrift store . . .and so I put it back.

The picture gnawed at me . . and I even dreamed about it. So, 4 days later back we trod determined to have the picture at any price. I raced back to where the pictures are . . . and sadly it was not there. I was soooo disappointed.

The following Sunday we were once again there to find something for our new place. Nineandahalf dropped me at the door as it was pouring down rain and so to kill a few minutes I went to look at the pictures. There in the corner . . almost completely covered by other things I could see the corner of “the picture”. I couldn’t believe it . . . .I couldn’t wait to show Nineandahalf when he came in . . .but once again . . .I decided it was just a little too much money . .. BUT I did overhear one of the workers say that the following Thursday all of the green tagged items would be half price. And, guess what? THE PICTURE WAS A GREEN TAGGED ITEM!

Four more short days and the picture would be only $25.00. Okay I would take the gamble and be sure that Nineandahalf was there at the sound of the key turning in the lock as they opened the doors. I waited on pins and needles . . .but of course he didn’t disappoint me and was there on time and managed to bring home the much longed for picture. It is indeed perfect in our new home, don’t ya think?

Criss Cross Applesauce!

Not much gives me a great sense of personal satisfaction than canning! I haven’t canned in quite awhile and was surprised and pleased that Feffie called and wanted me to teach her and help her can some homemade applesauce.

She managed to score a great deal on apples! That’s one thing I can say about her . . .if you want to know where the best price or deal oh anything is . . Just ask her!

I lugged over my old canner and supplies and off to her house on Sunday I went. We peeled, and smashed, and seasoned (cinnamon and nutmeg), and cooked, and smashe some more until the applesauce was cooked just right! Filled the jars and canned away. We managed to make 21 quarts and 7 pints of applesauce . . and then on to make 7 qts of apple pie filling.

It was fun to work together in the kitchen and what a sense of accomplishment – just to see all the jars lined up . . and knowing the family would have applesauce for several months.

Superman said that he could take it or leave it and wondered what would be done with all of that applesauce! Feffie opened the first jar to have with her meatloaf dinner. She had figured that a quart jar would probably last her family for 2 meals. Well . .the good news is that apparently it was a huge hit . . . Superman ate 3 bowls full as did Hallie and Nathan. They practically licked the jar clean! Nathan wanted Mommie to open another one! So it passed the family taste test with flying colors! (Feffie called this morning to see about getting more apples so we can make more! At this rate, they will empty all the jars and we can fill them up again without having to buy new ones!)

After that I helped her get started on some homemade chicken soup with some left over chicken she had. And when I left to go home, there was Superman in the kitchen with the pink Kitchen Aide tackling the machine to make some homemade noodles for the soup! I wonder if they will have applesauce with the soup!

Now I have the canning bug . .The jars look so nice in my kitchen all lined up on my new pantry shelving. I can’t wait to make some marmalade, strawberry preservers, tomatoes and salsa . . my list is getting longer!

Granddog Duties!

So . . .I guess taking care of the grandbabies . . . includes “grand dog duties” as we discovered this past weekend.

The Grandbabies ( and their parents of course) took a weekend away and drove to Pullman to spend the weekend with Furrbait and see the college campus. The two granddogs were to stay at home and a neighbor girl come over to let them in and out of their kennels and feed them. These cute lab puppies, Charles and Lucy, are 9 mos old and full of mischief.

We had just settled in for a nice relaxing weekend in our jammies, when an emergency call cam from Stef. Help, Help, Help . .. she was hysterical. Apparently the puppies had been left in the house for the evening. Big mistake there after all . . they are puppies. When the little girl arrived to put them in the kennel for the night what a sight she did behold. The puppies had feasted on the pantry . . . wrappers and all . . .and of course with upset tummies and no way to get out . . well I’m sure you can imagine the sight . . and of course smell! Miles away and with no one to call on . . .Nineandhalf and myself were the closest options . . .Living less than 7 miles away now . . we were the obvious choice.

Knowing my aversion to icky smells - - -good Ole Nineandahalf .. . . got dressed and went over to take care of business . . . .and the doggie business. Oh my . .. I guess it was something . . . .He cleaned it up and went back over on Saturday and then we both went on Sunday to scrub the carpets before the family got home. He is such a trooper . . and certainly this falls outside of the normal duties for a grandpa. . .but he did it without complaint!

Well . . after all . .when we watch the grandbabies . .I take care of the diapers and other bathroom issues . .. . he’s in charge of the granddogs!

Finally Moved!

What a month! So many changes in our lives . . . .so of course we had the move. All I can say about the trauma . . .and I do mean trauma . . .of moving is that I hope to not do it again! The upside . . . well . .we found an adorable old home complete with a great landlord! We have spent the last couple of weeks painting and organizing and going thru all of our belongings. We did manage to part with several items that truthfully we didn’t even know we had! So in that respect . . moving can be a good thing!

The cats are starting to adjust . . although thru the trauma Clyde has managed to about snatch himself bald! And Leo is his usual happy go lucky self! As for Nineandahalf . . . he’s managed to smash a finger and take a hunk out of his scalp in the process!

The landlord, Lance, is great to work with . . .we can paint and do any type of improvements (within reason) and he will take it off of our rent. The place is just about complete and is oh soooo cute and very shabby chic! I love it . . . .

Pool Boy has his own “cave” upstairs and it looks really nice. He painted and did it all himself . .and it’s very masculine and nice . . .a very homey cave for him!

Our final project is the guest room . . .so any guests request . .let us know. We’ll be opening our own version of a bed and breakfast . . we give you a bed . . .you make us breakfast . .let us know when you would like us to pencil you in!

Look for pictures soon!

October 1st!

Okay . .. so our life has pretty much been turned upside in the last couple of weeks and I’ve not been updating my blog! It’s the 1st of October and so I am going back to fill everyone in on the happenings of the last few weeks! Enjoy!

So in a nutshell ( and then of course I’ll elaborate on more happenings later today) here’s the family update:

• Pool Boy moved home from South Dakota and staying with us. It’s been an adjustment for us all. He’s working part time tiling and part time at Bath and Body Works. Still looking for his niche and now even considering school as an option. We’ll see as the whole family does their best to support him!
• Furrbait started back to school and started at new job at WSU. He loves his job and college life.
• Superman is going to back to school as well and is looking at a new career field – nursing. It is never too late to pursue your dream and we all wish him the best!
• Nine and a half is going back to school in January to pursue something in forensics. Looks like we will have a family of college students of all ages!

Inasectafetafoy!

First let me explain the title. . . .When Furrbait was little he quicly understood that “bad “ words were off limits. He always was very imaginative and so he came up with his own words. When he was mad . .. and I do mean very mad . . .He would yell, ‘You…..You…….You inasectafetafoy!” None of us really knew what that meant or where he got that but we all knew it was bad! So to avoid “bad” words and yet let everyone know how I feel . . .the title says it all.

Our landlord . . now nicknamed Inasectafetafoy has always been a pain. There have been problems after problems with him . . . so many I can’t go into them all on this blog -- - but we have stayed (despite Furrbaits repeated urgings for us to go). He’s been at our place most of the summer . . .almost every weekend . . . . and then it happened - - -the straw that broke the camels back. He replaced the roof (with no notice to us) and was at our house for almost a week every day - - wanting in . . wanting this . .wanting that. And so I finally balked.

Just as I suspected . . we got a call from the property management woman, and Inasectafetafoy has decided that he “wants a fresh start with new tenants” and so we need to move out by Oct 31st. After a momentary panic and a sleepless night . . . I decided this was a blessing in disguise. We found a new place with a great landlord at $20 less per month with much more space. We are excited and can’t wait to get in!

Thank you, Inasectafetafoy, for giving us the push we needed!

On to a fresh new start and greener pastures!

Too Close for Comfort!

I was awakened the other morning by a phone call before 6. It was Molehead ( the kids’ dad) calling. He had just heard on the news of a house fire in the 18000 block of Lake Desire Drive. Now that street isn’t that big . . . and that community is pretty small . . and more important that is where my Bratty Brat lives in my mom’s house.

I turned on the news right away and of course called my mom. Forunately it was not her home . .. but it was far too close for comfort. It was one of the houses just next door. The neighbor (who I have known since he was a little boy), Nick, was instrumental in saving the life of the man who lived in the house. He pulled him from the burning house! The news showed the whole thing and even interviewed him.

It was strange to think about being so close to home . . .and having someone I personally knew such a hero. Proof positive that ordinary people do extraordinary things!

Happy Birthday, Nathan!

Happy 2nd birthday to our grandson, Nathan! He is definitely ALL boy! He is so good natured and always smiling! It has been so fun to watch him go from a baby to a little boy! What a great adventure that is!

He used to be the spitting image of Daddy . .and while he has many similiarities his looks do seem to be changing . . and every now and then Grammie sees a glimpse around the eyes of a couple other little boys she had!

Happy birthday, Nathan!

Baby it's HOT outside!

Well . . it’s definitely HOT outside for Seattle . . who am I kidding? It’s hot outside for pretty much anywhere! But here with few of us having air conditioning it’s stifling . . . .and usually around here if nothing else it cools off at night . . .Well . . I guess you can say it cooled off but I don’t consider 70 as the over night low a cool night.

Everyone is trying to think of ways to stay cool. I’m thankful that over the course of last winter and this spring the Garage Sale Store provided us with 4 nice fans for very nominal prices . . .I think all 4 together didn’t total $20. Hmmmm . .. I wonder what I could sell them for on Craigslist today . . . .Nope .. I’m not giving them up for any amount of money!
Our house is pretty private so I did consider running thru the sprinkler . . .although I was certain I was much too old for that . . .but then . . who would see me? And for an ever so brief moment I considered putting a tarp on the lawn and pretending it was a slip n slide . . . I’d have it all to myself and not have to share with siblings and neighborhood kids as I did in my youth . .. I think the heat was making me a bit light headed and delirious. Once I snapped out of it I could easily see visions of myself in the ER trying to explain what I was doing at my age pretending to have a slip n slide and injurying myself - -- Well I ruled it out . . .Instead I opted for a cool shower . . .or sticking my heard under the faucet . . .. Both of those worked well and at least saved me a little dignity.

I’m not sure I want to see our electric or water bills for this month! Yikes! But at this point anything we can do to stay cool is well worth it!

Return of Pool Boy

By a nice turn of events Pool Boy has come home for a brief visit. Seems like he’s been gone FOREVER . . .yeah I know .. spoken like a true mom - -- but it’s only been since Mother’s Day! Yep . . he left on Mother’s Day - -that night. He is only here for a few days and will be returning to South Dakota -- - he looks the same and has shiny red Jeep . .. well not so shiny after it was attacked by hail balls the size of tangernes . . .but a really nice vehicle! I don’t think he’s necessarily enjoying his “adventure” in South Dakota . . . .it’s hard to make new friends . . . but he does have a job with a large stable company . .and heck . .. it’s building character!

Walla Walla Onion Festival!

Well . . .let’s just sum this one up by saying that it could have been enough to make a person cy!
· The temperature was over 103
· The show was disorganized
· The entertainment to bring people to the show was cancelled

All in all . . I guess what I’m trying to say is that it sucked! Our sales were not good . . .. and we really didn’t enjoy the entire show - -- so what to do?

Well cut out losses . . .and so we did . . we shut up shop and spent Saturday evening wine tasting = = = Hey . .when in Rome, right? Surrounded by all those downtown wine tasting rooms we could walk to = heck we couldn’t pass it up . . .

And then . . .well we got up at O’dark thirty and decided to go to the Sunday market at Roslyn to help recoup some of our monies. It was on the way home and made it a break even weekend . . .but heck . .. we had a nice hotel room . .. enjoyed some wine tasting . . . .had a nice dinner out and brought some Walla Walla “grape juice” home - - -and we could write it off as a business expense . . .gotta love this - --and on top of it all we were able to pick up some nice fabrics . ..

So? What seemed like a bad weekend . . .ended up making us “Sew Happy”!

Burien Farmer's Market

Burien Farmer’s Market! What a surprise this has been!

Nineandahalf started doing this show totally on a fluke two weeks ago and today is week #3. The market is in downtown Burien and has turned out to be such a surprise! We had talked about taking our wares to a farmer’s market but worried that perhaps the same people would be there week after week and we would not sell much. Well . .. we were wrong! The sales have blossomed week after week and we have customers returning as promised! Nineandahalf is delighted with his sales skills . . and has even acquired clothing to go with our pink, black and white theme! Our new easy up, signs and brochures make us look pretty “spiffy” as my Mom would say!

I can’t help but smile and snicker to myself. Wasn’t that long ago that I took him with me for an inauguration into the world of us gypsy craft mongers. It was for the annual trek to Cle Elum over the 4th of July. He stood in the street as the clang of poles filled the air as crafters set up their tents on the dusty streets of Cle Elum. He turned out and seemed very awed – his face in disbelief as he asked me, “So? What? Are you and all these people just going to set up a tent and sell stuff?”

“Yes.” I replied and told him just to watch. That was the beginning of his initiation into the world of street fairs. And boy did he take to it like a duck out of water. With his business expertise Sew Happy is flourishing. . .he started by getting us signed up to take “plastic” which boosted our sales 30%. And how do I know that you might ask? Well because he figures and keeps track of everything . . .drives me nuts . .. but is helpful for the “business”. New racks, new signs, coordinating business cards, brochures, a new easy up and shows almost every weekend!

My dream of doing my little Sew Happy business full time seems to be on the horizon - -- and getting closer all the time!

4th of July!

What better place to celebrate the 4th of July than in Small Town, USA!?!? And Cle Elum sure fits the bill in that department. Where else can you see the following sights!

A parade with every local John Deere tractor, children on bicyles, local politicians in convertibles toss candy to little children and of course floats! As down home and hokey as this parade is = =it simply makes you smile at the simplicity of it all.

Of course there were hotdogs, rootbeer floats, watermelon and all kinds of food to celebrate the holiday. People were dressed in their 4th of July best! Take a look at these two patriotic ladies - - and no they were not part of the parade - -just simply showing their patriotism . . .and folks seemed to take it in stride!

And so we too celebrated the birth of our nation. 4th of July also calls for family - and we were lucky enough to have Kyle and Megan meet us in Cle Elum and spend the day - -- we ate dinner at Village Pizza in Roslyn where they have the "best pizza on the planet" and that's a promise - - laughed, joked and poked around the old cemetery littered with American flags! It was a grand day!

Cle Elum Craft show!

Our next stop on our list of craft shows for the season - -Cle Elum - -I've done this show for more than 15 years and it still surprises me. It is grossly disorganized and certainly not professional in the least. Things don't have to be home made so you can pretty much pull out a card table and if you own it -- sell it - -and believe me some people do!
But here's picture of our new sign and on of our booth! We certainly classed the place up a bit!

This year the show seemed more disorganized than usual - - and what a fiasco it was! The 102 temperature didn't help . . . .We were told we had to get there on Friday by 5:00 so we could set up . . After all, as Renee told us, the spaces were first come first serve. So . . instead of going over on Saturday morning (the show was Saturday and Sunday only) we had to go over on Friday night - -- this incurring another hotel bill . .grrrrr

And so we showed up around 4 in the heat of the day - -- and guess what - -- there was no first come first serve . .the booths were assigned . . .and no , we didn't have to set up on Friday . . .about half the folks set up on Saturday morning.

The show is so disorganized and the local towns folk seeming squabbling over the particulars - - that we aren't even sure what it is called anymore -- Some call it Pioneer Days and then others call it Taste of the Valley. The latter I really can't figure out - - -just what "tastes" are there from Cle Elum? Well there is a Dairy Queen and good breakfast joint . . but I hardly see where they could call it Taste of the Valley - - -but guess that's us city folks.

So, you may ask . .. why do I keep going back? Well there's just something about it that continues to draw me there . . maybe it's the years of camping close by and doing the show while the kids were little . .. or the home towniness of the parade and 4th of July festivities - -- with that said . .I think it's time to put this show on my list of past performances.

Burien Strawberry Festival - Show #2

So this past weekend marks show #2 for the 2009 season. Our little booth was set up in Burien at their Annual Strawberry Festival. We had a great location and as always met some really nice people.

Next door was a roasted corn vendor from Covington and what a nice gal she was! And on the other side sweethearts Mary and Darrell. Mary makes the most beautiful Swaorvski crystal jewelry and some made of gemstonres They were gorgeous and when the sun was out it sparkled and shined! If you want to take a look at her fabulouse creations, here’s the website. (No worries, Mary . . .I am not charging for the advertising!) http://www.classysassyjewelry.com/

I think that is one of the things we enjoy most - - -the wonderful fellow vendors we have met along the way. We really hit it off with Mary and Darrell. We have so much in common and with nothing to do between customers but gab, Mary and I got rather well acquainted. In fact, I do believe that they have been talked into going on a cruise with us sometime. As luck would have it, even tho they are from the Kelso area they do many of the same shows that we do: Kent Cornucopia, Renton River Days, Sumner Arts and Crafts Fair. We’re hoping they are close enough that we can get better acquainted.

Sales were great and it was fun to see so many little girls walking around the fair in one of our handmade dresses. It always makes me smile and I think they look so cute! Of course I guess I am biased.

Sunday found Nineandahalf up with our older tent at the Roslyn Sunday Market. Despite a gusty windy day and the first day of the season he did alright! At least he didn’t have rain. All was well in Burien until the rain hit around 2:30 complete with some thunder. That pretty much killed any future sales. However, our sales were still good and I’m sure would have been even better had the rain not hit – in fact they exceeded our expectations which is always good.

I hadn’t done this show for many, many years . .. but I sure won’t miss it for the next couple!

Happy Father's Day to the Father's in my life!

First of all to Papawishus . . .What a wonderful man and great roll model. He was a great father to me in every sense of the word and an awesome and fun grandpa to the kids. He is sorely missed!

And Superman, who is an awesome father to my grandbabies and puts up with my daughter! He is patient and family orientated and very involved with their care and upbringing. You’re a great dad, Superman! And I hope you enjoy that wonderful Father's Day gift, ANOTHER DOG!

And to Mark, who was and continues to be a good dad to our 4 children.

And last but certainly not least, Nineandahalf, who is a great step dad to the kids. He truly loves and cares about them as his own and loves to watch them grow and mature. It’s been a tough road a couple of times but he has always had their best interest at heart!

The BIG Apple!

Ever have one of those days that just stand out in your memory. One where you can remember every little detail. Of course you have! We all have . . and sometimes they are big and important days and other times they are just run of the mill type days.

As we approach summer and the 4th of July with all it's patriotism . .I thought I'd share one of mine. It was a day in New York . . . the Big Apple and I LOVED it!

The Big Apple . .*sigh* and what do I love about the big apple???? Wow . .I guess because it is just that BIG .everything is larger than life -- - Broadway, the Statue of Liberty, the museums, the billboards, the lights . . .everything . . .but most of all the people. . Yes THE PEOPLE!

As a West Coast girl, I was very apprehensive about visiting New York City for the first time . . .I guess out here we just believe too many of the negative stories about the Big Apple and it’s people. (Personally I think these are perpetuated by people from Los Angeles – the big apple of the west - - out of jealousy) What LA misses out on . . New York has - - hands down. The first time I went I was so astounded by the friendliness of the people . . .many times we met folks and they loved to share their city. You just don’t find that in every big city. Nineandahalf and I took the New York Harbor dinner cruise one evening around the Statue of Liberty . . and while eating met a fella from the Bronx . . who said he and his family owned and Italian restaurant and invited us to his place! He gave us his business card and we learned so much about the city and the people from him. That evening was one of those once in a lifetime experiences that I don’t think we could every experience again . . . .it was magical!

We were late to the boat . . . and had brought our dress up clothes ( and yes despite being almost 50 at the time . .my 4 inch heels) and we ended up having to change in the car - - something we will laugh about today . . . .and we rushed in just barely making it . . . .it was a fun evening and the food pretty good - -- but the New Yorkers marvelous. It wasn’t tourist season yet and the boat had a lot of New Yorkers aboard out for a nice dinner cruise. . . the best part . . .dancing with my honey to “New York, New York” as we went by the Statue of Liberty. Then as the sun went down and the stars came out the boat paused and everyone spontaneously held hands on the deck and sang “God Bless America.” Are you teary eyed yet? I am . . .everytime I think about it - -

Ah yes .. New York . . . .what a marvelous place!

And yes . .. I did take this picture!

Sage-N-Sun Festival in Ephrata

And so our craft season starts!

Our first show of the 2009 season was at Ephrata for the 100th Annual Sage-N-Sun Festival. This show was new to us and although 3 hours away we decided to give it a try. The show wasn’t our best show . . .but then again it wasn’t our worst either. It fell right in line with an average show and our show minimal show expectations. It was a nice show on the Grant County Courthouse front lawn under some beautiful old trees. There was a church nearby that had the most beautiful music that chimed throughout the town every hour. The slight breeze and shade really made it a nice day . . .and the architecture from this 1895 building wonderful. It was a small show but a nice one.

We are always amazed at the difference going over the pass makes. Not only in terms of weather but in terms of the people. They seem more friendly and down to earth. The families seem somehow more wholesome and family oriented. And of course the political views are far more conservative. It’s almost like going to a different world.

While meeting people who came into our booth, they routinely asked where we were from. And we when told them, then would nod and say “Oh, you are from the dark side.” The first person that said this I thought was just perhaps teasing, but we began hearing this from pretty much everyone. We had to smile. Sitting there analyzing this I wondered if they came up with the term “dark side” because of our weather . . .or perhaps because of our crime and “darker” lifestyle. It was an interesting thought.

I had always thought that here in Western Washington I lived in “normal” America. But sitting there on Sunday afternoon, and seeing all the families dressed in Sunday best walking hand in hand around the courthouse, I began to think that perhaps they were “normal” America and more in line with how most of our country lives in the cities and rural areas of the main portion of our country. Definitely some food for thought - - and yet it seems that the big cities control the country’s politics and laws.

So as our craft weekend came to a close we began our three hour drive home to the “dark side.” The closer we got the more at home I felt. The skies did indeed get darker and the temperature dropped a good 20 degrees. We began to see trees . . .and mountains . . .and small waterfalls and even an occasion deer. Over the pass we went toward home. Dark side or not, it was home and as we pulled in the driveway even Leo was excited to be home. Getting out the cooler air felt good and the air fresh and crisp to my nostrils and throat. As much as we enjoy our weekends, it is always nice to be home. And the threat of rain during the coming week . . .well that doesn’t bother me at all . . It comes with the lush greenery, fresh air and cooler temperatures that I love!

The Young Americans Foundation

Wow . . I can hardly believe that my son is back in the Washington D.C. area working with this organization. Here's a picture of him with a senator.

Four children and they all are so different -- -Stefanie definitely a “Republicrat” as she called it . . Like most of us a “little of both” . .. . . Brad clearly as Republican as they come . . .. Kevin although I would call him a Republicrat I think he would tell you he’s more Democrat . . .and then Kyle . . .who follows in line with Brad. It’s amazing to me how political Brad and Kyle are . . . .and strikes me as a bit funny in some ways . . .

Brad and Kyle resemble each other more than any of the other kids . . .In fact when Brad was in high school, his friends referred to Kyle as Baby Brad a nickname that seemed to stick for awhile . .. and now that they both are in their 20’s their belief system and politic nature seem to be more alike as time goes on . . . .considering they were both raised in a household where politics were not discussed a lot . . . and neither of us were particularly politically minded . . . it’s funny how two of the children are that way . . and Brad in particular.

Despite the situation, I continue to follow his accomplishments and remain very proud of him . .. I hear stories of his antics from different family members and smile . .. He always had such a great sense of humor and one that always jived with my own. His acconmplishments make me proud of the young man that he has become and when folks tell me that he dreams of a career in politics I have to nod my head . .. yep . . .wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see him someday on Capital Hill!

Brad - -whereever you are . .. I love you and am very proud of you!

The Joys of Grandbabies!

I’m glad to see that Stefanie and Superman take some time out for themselves and go out together fairly regularly . . . not only for their marriage but because this gives us grandparents an opportunity to spend time with the grandbabies . . . .hmmm . . .well guess since Hallie is 4 and Nathan soon to be 2 . .grandbabies seems a little odd . . .but my grandbabies they will always be!

So . . .while Mr. And Mrs. Superman went to a movie, the Grandbabies came to have dinner and spend the evening with Grammie and Grandpa. Let me just say this disclaimer first . . . .no , we don’t just eat chocolate, chocolate, chocolate.

First of all, Hallie and I of course had to go thru our ritual of nail painting . .. She knows right were the nail polish is and loves to pick our her color and also a top coat with “sparkles”. She knows that Daddy will not allow red or orange and always tells me that . . .although she then looks at me longingly hoping I will override Daddy. Not a chance . . Have you seen the size of him . . . .and I don’t call him Superman for nuthin’.

The kids wanted chocolate milk with dinner . .. so of course Grandpa ran to the little local market and paid an arm and a leg for two small containers of chocolate milk . . . .he thought each child needed their own. We aren’t milk drinkers and one still remains where it will die a slow death. Darn . .I meant to send that home with the kids.

Hallie loves to cook and so after dinner made chocolate “cake cups” – although she corrected me and said cupcakes . . .guess she’s isn’t fluent in the family language yet . .. but she’s learning . .. she does know what a ginky is! Hallie loves to crack the eggs! Now the problem started . . . .my mixer only has one beater . . and I fondly remember the days of my own mom letting my brother and I lick the beaters . .. there were two . . and I can almost feel the smooth metal rode against my tongue as I licked the batter clean . . .Ahhhh those were the days! So? How to solve this problem . . .. nothing else to do . .Nathan can’t be short changed just because he is littler . . although he seemed a little inexperienced at wanting to lick the beater . . . .So I took a large spoon and covered it in gooey chocolate batter and let him have at it . . . .They both did pretty well and there was little clean up afterwards . . just a little on their faces and noses . . . yep . .they didn’t want to waste a drop of the chocolately goodness . . .

With the cupcakes baked we had time to wait for cooling before frosting them . . .and what else would you frost them with . .. why chocolate frosting of course! We frosted them and of course this required more licking of kitchen utensils when we were done. By the time it was time for them to go home, we had a box full of chocolate cakecups to send home - -you didn’t think I’d keep these did you? I can only imagine how much weight I would gain from eating an entire batch - -- Nineandahalf isn’t much of a sweet eater - - and so home they went . . where Hallie had assured me that Daddy loved these kinds best . . Hope that helps soften the blow from the sparkles on Hallie’s nails . .. She picked purple sparkes and they were a bit dark over the pale pink polish . .. but honest . . .I didn’t realize it . . .

Happy Anniversary Nineandahalf!

Today is our 4th anniversary . .I’m highly suspicious that perhaps Nineandahalf has forgotten . . but we shall see . He can be sneaky and he hasn’t mentioned a thing . . .

And so today, I think back on that day just 4 years ago . In some ways it seems so very long ago and yet it seems like yesterday. We had planned, planned and replanned this important day a million times . .. and our lives had had more than their share of ups and downs. So . . we finally decided to tie the knot. Well . …..I say we .. . .but it was really me who drug her feet a bit . . .I’d been here before .. . .and I wanted to be sure . . .and yet there are no guarantees in life . . ..and so we decided to elope.

Elope? Now that’s a silly word for folks our age, isn’t it . . .. but so we decided. We decided to get married in Leavenworth and had made reservations at a small chapel garden for our ceremony and a weekend stay at a bed and breakfast along the Icicle River. It was wonderful. My dress came from a local haunt and I made a western style hat and veil to go with it . . .I even had satin boots .. Nineandahalf looked quite handsome in his western tuxedo jacket with black wrangler jeans and boots. It was a lovely day and ceremony - -- The minister, a woman, was touched by us and our sincerity and emotions for this special day. Afterwards we walked around Leavenworth before going to our dinner and many of the merchants gave us “wedding gifts.” It was a grand day!

And here we are 4 years later!

Ya know what Nineandahalf? Life doesn’t get any better than this!

Pullman here we come!

Hindsight is always 20/20 isn’t it? I’m always amazed at how clearly I can think after the fact - - LOL

We had decided before leaving on our cruise that when we came back we would take advantage of the 3 day Memorial Day weekend and go see Furr in Pullman and his new apartment. Well - -- after a week of “vacation” we were tired. And the thought of a 5 hour drive was not appealing - .. But . .I didn’t want to disappoint him . .and more importantly I missed him and was anxious to see his new place. He’s always so proud of his places and he’s so good at fixing them up - -- you could blindfold me and put me in the apartment and I would know it was his - -- spotless clean . . .a woodsy smelling candle burning and Mariner’s paraphenlia everywhere and yet it all tastefully decorates his little abode. His place is quite cute and he was certainly proud of it.

He had promised to cook a “Mother’s Day” dinner for me since he didn’t come home for the holiday. He’s an awesome cook. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine swapping recipes and sharing cooking tips with my son . .. .but we do and he’s a great cook @! The first night he made a pork roast seasoned with rosemary in his crock pot with some broccoli - -it was great . . and of course night two was his signature dish - -Fajitas - -- and truly . . no one does them better!

Our big surprise was his new “toy” . .a silver moped. Honestly . .I couldn’t help it . . .when he kept riding it and grinning . .I had visions of him as a small boy in his Flinstone car! He was soooo cute . .. and yet I guess that’s not how I should describe my son of almost 21 years. It was fun to see him excited about it -Just look at that grin . . .it hasn't changed in 21 years!
- -and before the weekend was out I too drove it. Kyle was great at teaching me how it worked and was excited that I wanted to give it a try and so I did - -squealing all the while . .. although only in the parking lot . . .and it was FUN! And for a brief moment I considered a pink moped with matching helmet for myself to drive back and forth to work . . .. yeah . . .I guess at my age that does sound ridiculous now . . .but hey . . .sounded like a winner that afternoon as we all played with his new toy.

We so enjoyed he weekend with Furr and Megan - - -they are so fun . ..easy to be around and good senses of humor . . .. we watched a movie – I left he movie choice in Megan’s hands and she didn’t disappoint me - -- we watched Bride Wars and it was cute. And so as we shared a bit of their college experience, rode the moped, ate Kyle’s good food and laughed and enjoyed one another . . .I had to ask myself . . .does life get any better than this?

The drive was worth the memories . . . most definitely!Bye Kyle. . .we'll see ya soon!

Don't let her sweet face fool ya!

Mia is meaner than mean!

On our trip over to see Furr, we of course took Leo, who was Furr’s dog before we inherited him. Leo and Mia had lived together before so we didn’t think there would be any problem. Leo just loves cat food - -I think it’s like candy for him. We hadn’t been there very long when his nose smelled the goods and off he went to investigate.

Like lightening he came flying out of the bedroom . .and right behind him on two feet - - -yes just her two hind feet were on the ground and her front paws were up and she was clawing the bejeebers out of Leo all while running on her two back feet. She was hissing and clawing and clawing and hissing. Leo was yelping. After the initial shock, Nineandahalf jumped up with Furr and managed to separate the two. I’ve never seen anything like it - -and literally we had to use tweezers to pull the tips of Mia’s claws out of Leo’s skin. I’m not sure who was hurt worse - -Leo or Mia. We pulled three claws out of him . . .but do you think he learned. No, just a short time later, he was back again and she cornered him in the room. We kept the door closed after that. You’d think he’d learn . . .but heck he’s male and loves cat food!

The sun sets on a wonderful cruise!

Sadly – all good things must come to an end. Our week had been full of fun, adventure, laughs and wonderful sights to behold! The only good thing was that we had put money down on something for the future . . . .so there was something to look forward to.

We were all fairly quiet on the long drive home . . .deep in thought and remembering and reliving all that we had done and seen in on short week! So many laughs and jokes -- - Great memories - -

Life doesn’t get any better than this!

A day at Sea!

We do enjoy the days at sea! Especially when they are right before we get home . . finally a day to relax and relax we did. We spent the last day doing last minute shopping in the shops, playing our last trivia game with Alex and Audri, eating . . .. well of course eating! And enjoying the activities around the ship. Nineandahalf and I took advantage of putting money down for a cruise at some time in the future. . .. TBA as they say . . . so look what all you readers have to look forward to . . . a blog of our vacation for the future. I can just hear the applause.

The Piggy Flu? In our room? Oh NO!!!

Just days before our trip, word of the Swine Flu was all over the news. Over reaction and pandemonium ensued. Talk about media hype and over exaggeration! Schools in our local area had closed due to potential for Swine Flu.

So, we all talked and determined that we did not want to fall victim to the Swine Flu (or Piggy Flu as we started calling it). We washed and dried and used hand sanitizer like crazy. And just when we started feeling a little comfortable and at ease something happened that made us nervous and go back to our sanitizing ways!

We were all in our room . ..talking and giggling about the days activities. Nineandahalf went into the bathroom to get his PJ’s on while us girls continued to yak away. In the middle of our conversation, Nineandahal appeared - - -and our conversation halted momentarily before we burst into laughter. There stood Nineandahalf in piggy short PJ shorts with wings on them . .. it was the dreaded Piggy Flu someone squealed. As we continued to squeal, the lights went out and shortly we could not believe what we saw - - the piggies glowed in the dark. It was hysterical! That Nineandahalf can sure be a kick and such a good sport.

Later as we all were just about asleep, I heard him say . . “Honey, look?” and as he flapped up the covers I could see the piggies glowing underneath. We both started giggling and woke everyone else up again . . so then everyone had to look. What a good sport - - now how many men would let there MIL and SIL take a look at their glowing short jammy pants under the covers!

The Piggy Flu had struck our cabin!

Ketchikan!

Ahhh . . the last of our Port’s of Call! It was a wonderful day. We got off the ship and had some time to explore the shops for a bit and pick up the rest of our freebies - - - another necklace from Effy’s and charm from Diamonds International. Those gold bracelets and charms are the best souvenirs and FREE. Can’t beat that!
We had gotten tickets to see the Lumberjack Show I really didn’t know what to expect but figured . . .when in Rome! The small stadium had heated and padded seats and heat lamps overhead. It was early (1100) and so still a little cool out. The show was very entertaining and we all enjoyed it - -and the best part . . .it gave our legs a chance to rest so we could head out for more shopping! And then back to the ship for a late snack some rest time and time to get ready for dinner!

We got back just in time to meet our new friends, Alex and Audri, for our daily afternoon trivia game. We had lots of fun and it often amazed me how Alex and I would write down the same answers (even if they were wrong) at the same time. It kinda became a joke of sorts They were a wonderful couple and we hope to keep in touch with them! They are both from Vancouver Island (Victoria) so it’s not that far away!
Alex and Audri in front of the ship! We really enjoyed you guys! Keep in touch!

Oh what a life this cruising is!

SNAILS!

Well at least that is Nineandhalfs version . .. . but I’ll let you judge for yourself. It was our 2nd formal night and of course the evening’s entre was steak and lobster. What a treat . . and yes with drawn butter. As an appetizer snails - -- okay escargot for you cultured folks was on the menu. All I know is that when I was a little girl my Pampa put out bait to kill these little things and somehow I can’t quite picture my grandmother fixing them for dinner . . .. . Ye, gads! (as my mom would say) We were all somewhat amazed at how adventurous BB was when it came to the food choices. She tried it all and many new things . . and so she ordered. And so she ordered the snails . .. hey you cultured folks can call them whatever you want . ..but they are SNAILS in my book. I told Nineandahalf that if he even let one touch his lips . . .no more kissing . . .for LIFE. Lord only knows what germs and vermine are transmitted thru these things. BB of course ordered them. I could not believe it! So I quickly thrust the camera into Nineandhalf’s hands to take a picture of her eating the snail. So . . .here’s his picture . . .

I don’t know about you . .but it sure looks to me like he got sidetracked . . .and I think he realized it too and started turning beat red. Nineandahalf is always good for a good blush. I’ll let you be the judge.

Now here’s the picture I took of of her eating snails.

So . .. for the rest of the time . ..everytime we saw a woman well endowed or with something rather revealing on . . we asked Nineandhalf if he wanted the camera. He will never live this down!

Mr Lindstrom, in the Piano Bar with Sticky Fingers!

And this brings us to the Great Camera Caper of 2009 –

After a day of beautiful scenery and a warm gorgeous day in Tracy Arm, a wonderful gourmet dinner and a show, we met up with Bratty Brat in the Piano Bar. We had discovered the Piano Bar a couple of nights earlier and really enjoyed the sing along with Lady Heather. BB was sitting on a stool around the piano and we three quickly took up residence around her. They were planning a game of Name That Tune and we thought that might be fun. So we sang for a bit and then the game was to start.

Next to BB there was an empty stool and a “gentleman” who was quiet enthralled with BB. His name was Clayton Lindstrom and this married chap was from Edmonton, Alberta. He was quite the voyeur and a little obnoxious not only with BB but also with Lady Heather. The game was over and we were having a great time . . (FYI I’m using some poetic license here so you’ll have bear with me - -remember that as we were told “What happens on a cruise ship, stays on the cruise ship”>) With that said, Phine left first followed by Nineandahalf and myself. It was about 11:00 and the night was still young. We wanted to get a good place to perch near the dance floor and boogie the night away. BB said she would be right up.

Here's a picture of the sticky fingered culprit sitting at the bar while Lady Heather makes the ivory sing!

We looked for her ... but she never arrived which wasn’t too unusual. We each had things we enjoyed and without a dance partner I can imagine that dancing might not be too much fun . . .Although group dances and dancing without partners is very common on cruise ships! Good music . . life is short . . .might as well dance!

Shortly be 1 AM we returned to the room and she was asleep. So what else could we do but order room service, of course! Dancing definitely works up an appetite. So there we were at 2 AM eating burgers and club sandwiches! It was a great night - - -

So now the stage is set . . . .and the crime is about to be realized - - - -

The following morning, BB realizes that she is missing her camera. We had been taking turns taking pictures in the Piano Bar and without asking Mr Sticky Fingers picked it up and started taking pics of all of us. Somehow the camera was now missing. Using our best sleuthing techniques and manning all possible vantage points, we were able to find him! When asked about the camera, he appeared nervous and said that “he would look in his cabin again.” AGAIN? What did that mean?

Even though it had not been 24 hours, we filed a missing camera report. And we searched and searched - - -but no camera. And so it is that half of our picture memories of the trip are lost forever!

As for all of us . . .we are certain that Mr. Sticky Fingers is enjoying a new digital camera! I hope he enjoys our pictures!

A view from the top!

Oh what a marvelous day in Tracy Arm! And what a great view from the top . . .the top of our marvelous country - -Alaska – the last frontier. While the glaciers are not as spectacular as Glacier Bay it was still gorgeous and a warm wonderful day -- the best I’ve ever seen in my 4 visits to Alaska - -- All in all our weather was absolutely perfect! Even the captain commented that this day was stellar and a one of a kind sorta day!
With that said -- -the great day did limit us a bit . . .The seals and sea lions . . and of course the baby’s were all out on the ice. So that we didn’t disturb them we could not get very close to the glaciers. But to see the babies on the ice was a thrill! In the picture you can see a mama and a baby on an iceberg and the black specs along the ice water edge are all seals. We could see them thru the binoculars and it was so fun to see these amazing animals in their natural environment - -- Note to all: If you ever go to Alaska be sure to take binoculars!

Here’s a couple more pics of the amazing scenery - - -

Of course Nineandahalf had to get us some Baileys and Coffee while we were out on the deck . . . .

And in Holland tradition they served split pea soup! That was a great treat for me since Nineandahalf hates anything with peas! It was great!

Life doesn’t get any better than this!

Not so Newlywed Game

As you can see - we really enjoy all of the games and contests on the ship - -gives us a chance to meet our fellow passengers and always makes for some good laughs - - This one was on us!

Once again Nineandhalf and I were selected to pay the “Not so Newlywed Game”. We had planned ahead and gone over the questions we had been asked in previous games and were sure that we would win. Our main mantra - - -well okay . .MY main mantra . . “JUST DON”T EMBARRASS ME” And so we were chosen. I just knew we bhad this one in the bag- I couldn’t have been more wrong!

There were two other couples . . One married 20 years and one married 60 years! And the questions . . .and the things people will say in public -- - amazing! Here’s a sampling of what we were asked - - -and of course we were NOT prepared for any of these questions!

· How much weight has your wife gained since you got married? (YIKES – Smart man that Nineandahalf - -he said none!)

· Which of your relatives would your husband like least to be stranded on desert island with? (Now this was funny - -and again Nineandahalf is pretty smart . . . not to air any dirty laundry here or anything . . .but he said Jack - -- - too funny - -guess that makes two of us!)

· Where is the strangest place that you have made whoopee? (Now this is where things got interesting - - -the couple married 60 years shared that their rendezvous was in their RV WHILE it was being worked on in a mechanic shop - - -and the other couple said – on a Quad in the middle of a blueberry path - oh my - -- - and when the host started singing – “I got my thrill . . . .on blueberry hill- “ I thought I might indeed wet my pants! And now for the really good part . .. . so . . you have to read the question closely - -- it says “where is the strangest place that you have made whooppe?

Now this is where Nineandahalf loses all points gained for the week . . .. Nineandahalf decided to share an incident from his younger days and announced - - “In the backseat of a car!” I was astounded . . and before I realized it our of my mouth came - - “Well, that must have been your first wife!” The place went wild with laughter . . . and after that we pretty much knew everyone on the ship as they came up to us . . . Women asking if I was “okay” and men just winking at Nineandahalf! It made for some good natured ribbing and fun .. .and was a way for us to meet and talk to many couples! All in good fun! (Yeah okay . . I am trying to be a good sport here . . .but he OWES me!

There's Gold in Them Thar Hills!

Finally to our first Port of Call, Juneau, and a chance to put our little piggies on Alaskan soil!(Yep those yellow tennie runners are mine! I need runnin' shoes to stake my claim! You can tell by the shoes who the novice was! *wink*)It was a fairly nice day although a little overcast. We didn’t have much time here . . . just the afternoon so we opted to do some exploring on our own!

And for those of you who think the goldrush is over -- -think again! There is indeed gold in them thar hills. We had gone to the shopping talk on the ship the day before and were given a “plethoria” (BB’s favorite word) of coupons and freebies to use in each port. We got off the ship running with our Holland America shopping bags to scoop up the loot and stake our claims before they were all gone! (see - - -BB is running in the picture below - --but clearly I am ahead and taking pics)

The best deal is the gold charm bracelet courtesy of Diamonds International . . .and then at each port and several in the Carribbean and other places you can collect a charm . . and its FREE! Of course they hope that you purchase a little bauble but many go in just for the freebies and they really don’t seem to mind!

Mom and BB purchased fur scarves for a fraction of the price here at home . . .Buy one for $19.99 and get one free! Heck of a deal and seemingly unbelievable. Well you know the old adage - - -“IF it seems to good to be true. . .. “ I had thought about getting one myself but figured it was something I really wouldn’t wear . . .and having to buy two . . I couldn’t think of anyone I thought might want one . . well except for Hallie - -I thought she’d probably love one for dressup!@ So I decided to pass . . .Good thing I did . . .. . The next day BB and Mom decided to wear there’s . . .and I do say they looked quite cute. (See how nice they look in the picture) Well they did look nice until they took them off - - -and their necks were black! At first I thought it was a shadow . . and I mean . .how do you tell someone . .. . “Your neck looks filthy!” There’s just no tactful way to say it - - -- So the bargain was a bust . . .Just like the miners of days gone buy . . . they had purchased equipment (hey scarves and jewelry are definitely “girl” equipment) and it was faulty!
We saw Sarah Palin’s house . . .and we waved . . .but she didn’t invite us in for tea or for any photos with her and the new baby - - -we were disappointed! We saw the Red Dog Saloon and were saddened to hear that our favorite comedian/piano player there has been stricken with a very serious illness and hopes to be back next year! Our thoughts and prayers go out to him . He has brought so much happiness and laughter to so many!

All in all our afternoon in Juneau was wonderful!
